Kerala, god's own land,is now devastated with a disaster and the biggest losers are people and mother nature. The Indian government can pay for the properties but who is going to pay for the loss of a mother whose child died or the loss of the wife whose husband is yet not found? Similarly there can not be any measure of the resources and biodiversity lost.
But who is to be blamed for this mess? The Kerala government who did nothing to protect the Western Ghats even after the recommendations of Kasturirangam Committee or the Tamil Nadu government who is getting blamed for releasing extra water into idukki reservoir. In my opinion the sole blame lies with us people because we have been blinded with development priorities and materialism to such an extend that we overlook mother nature's capacity to give back.
The Kerala flood and prior to it,the Uttarakhand floods have shown us the signs that whenever we try to overuse nature's resources, it will back fire. These flood not only destroyed properties or resources but have taken lives and left people in relief camps where even food was in shortage and sanitation facilities nil.
The government's announcement of aid can maybe make new houses for people but can it bring back the same environment, hydrology or even the same people who lived there? But the most important question by environmentalits remains unanswered- COULD'NT THIS BE AVOIDED OR MADE LESS HORRIFYING IF AT ALL ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION WAS SEEN AS INTEGRATED WITHIN DEVELOPMENT???
